Brand protection for a fast moving SME

Launched in 2017, SkinnyBrands offers low calorie, gluten free and vegan-friendly alcoholic drinks that don‘t compromise on taste or alcohol volume. Launching a new alcoholic drinks brand is always a challenge as the market is very crowded. SkinnyBrands has developed its own unique lager and cider products. Since the summer of 2017, we’ve worked on SkinnyBrands’ IP strategy, obtaining protection for its key brand assets.

For a new and rapidly growing business, there are a vast number of business-critical issues which must be handled on a day-to-day basis before the business owners and employees are able to go out and sell any products. The protection of IP is just one of these issues.

Before we could help SkinnyBrands, we needed to get to know the business owners and their aims and objectives for the brand (as we would with any client) — as well as deal with the immediate issues they faced. A key part of this process is education, so that they understand why we protect IP, what can be protected, how this is done and the associated costs.

We worked closely with SkinnyBrands to develop an IP protection strategy. We then helped the business undertake a benefit analysis. We’ve since performed trade mark searches and made applications in its key territories.
