Narcos is a popular Netflix crime thriller series which tells the story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. The series is currently in its third season and has been renewed for a fourth. Netflix is being sued by the holding company founded by Escobar's brother, Escobar Inc. The company requested $1 billion in compensation in July 2016 in relation to what it claims are intellectual property violations relating to use of Escobar's name.

A trade mark search under the company name Escobar Inc. shows that amongst others, the words "Pablo Escobar", "Narcos", "Escobar", and "Cartel Wars" were all filed at the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2016 and cover use for television series and films, for example.

The case took a turn for the worse this week when a location scout for the show was found murdered in his car in Mexico. Netflix has said that the facts surrounding his death are "still unknown". However there has been speculation his death could be linked to the narco gangs.

According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pablo Escobar's brother was reported to say that he would "close their little show". Hopefully the dispute will be settled amicably
